The sun's damaging UV rays are the biggest contributor to premature aging. There are two types of rays that make it through the earth's atmosphere and onto your skin. First, you have the shorter wavelength UVB, the rays responsible for sunburn. These rays are strongest in the summer months and cannot penetrate through glass. The longer wavelength UVA reaches deeper into your skin and causes the destruction of collagen and elastin, the fibers that give skin its support and resiliency. What most people don't know about UVA rays is that they stay about the same strength all year round and penetrate through glass. Take a look at the top of your arm compared to the underside. Notice how the side that doesn't get as much sun exposure is softer, and younger looking? Sun damage is cumulative, a little bit every day adds up over the years, just remember that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and put on your number one anti-aging product every day, a broad spectrum sunscreen.
